Second wallet prototype

Here's the second wallet prototype. Looking pretty good!  Notice the laser-cut brand name in the exterior material. This looks better than the surface etching and also reinforces the relationship between the two materials. Yes, this wallet will be sold under 'actual' rather than FUZ. Long story...

I've made a lot of changes: First, I've glued a lining piece to the exterior, which makes it so much stiffer than the first prototype with the same amount of material.

Next, I've added extra material at the edges that will fold over and create more finished edges as well as add a lot of stiffness. When you fold and then sew close to the fold line it adds structure. This wallet works really well the way it is, but Joanna says the outside vertical edge folds are not wide enough to catch all the layers with the seam. On the next iteration I will improve that edge and also add one more foldover on the top of the green internal material.

Next time I'm also going to try out some screen patterns cut into the faux leather. Probably will be in the inside pocket area and work with the actual logo to reinforce the difference between the materials.

  1. Hey Josh ... I follow your blog because I enjoy your design process. The wallet looks good. Where do you get your materials laser cut? I currently use Ponoko however it can burn the materials. I noticed your wallet pieces are not burnt. Where do you go?

    Thanks

  2. Hi Thomas, thanks for reading! I've been cutting the materials myself at Techshop in SF. The place is an incredible resource if you live in the Bay Area. Having access to a laser cutter has been a breath of fresh air, to say the least. It's amazing what you can do when you're in the driver's seat.
