We finished the latest prototype of the wallet and I think the design phase is done for now. I'm pretty happy with it. We've resolved a lot of issues and the thing is sew-able, which was not easy to achieve.
The exterior material wraps on the center edges but not on the outside. I think this shows better the idea that this material is encasing the interior fabric.
You can see all the layers at the edge. I like the exposed stratification: reminds me of my geology studies back in college, looking at road cuts to see the structure of rock formations. The green fabric is folded under so there are no raw edges. Also, the seam does not cut through the radius corner (compare to previous version). I'm going to improve the bottom left corner joint so that there is a curve in the silver material. The curve was supposed to be there but the dimensions were off.
If you study the seams on the inside, you can see that they will result in an interesting pattern on the outside. This was a necessity, but I like this interlock better than the single seam of the previous versions. Next time, the outer seam will not run to the edge of the wallet, but rather stop 1/8" shy so that it's even with the inner seam. Also, the top seam will also be 1/8" from edge.
Now I'll make a few small changes to the pattern, and laser cut 5 or 10 wallets worth of material so that Joanna can find her own best way to sew. So far I've been looking over her shoulder, and I have far less sewing experience, obviously. During this time I'm going to work on packaging/labeling, deciding on other colors, and figuring out pricing.
You know what i would love to see in a wallet? Two or more magnetically separate pouches so i could keep credit cards on one side and my subway pass on the other without them interfering with each other. Is that possible? Currently i'm having to carry two wallets because of this problem.
ReplyDeletehmm, I don't have that problem. and I'm afraid that goes beyond my technical ability. I did want to put my bart card in such a place that I can scan it without taking it out of the wallet though... I'll have to see if that works with this wallet.
ReplyDeleteIt should work with pretty much any wallet. Over here people just slap their wallets or even their purses right on the scanner. It makes the whole process much faster than how BART does it, with having to actually take out your card, feed it into the slot, them pick it out again after you go through ...
ReplyDeleteSeriously, i think you should research this issue! Millions would thank you.
Yes we have the card scan system now for bart too, where it automatically deducts the ticket cost from your bank acct. Although I have had to take my card out and wave it over the scanner rather than slapping my wallet down. But I haven't tried it with the new wallet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing what this wallet looks like from all angles. Its cool seeing how it has room to put bank cards and IDs while maintaining its thin design.
