I finally tried cutting the ends of the zip tie with the new die and it works great! So much better than a knife blade and template.
Here's the hand press that applies the pressure to the die.
I have marked the proper tie placement on the die with tape.
Notice that the blade is hidden in foam rubber. This is so that the cut parts are ejected out of the die, which is important on closed shapes but doesn't matter here.

love this - thanks soooo much for sharing your process. I find the blade being buried in the foam interesting - does the foam recede a bit and expose more of the blade when the pressure is applied?

No problem Susan, thank YOU for reading and commenting! Yes the foam is squashed by the pressure. On something like a circle die the foam is necessary or else it would be hard to get the cut piece out...
