I've been thinking about how to contain the paper for the chaotic akiri. What I've come up with so far is a clear acrylic box. Here are some test bends done by heating the acrylic for about 2 minutes and then bending by hand.
Here's a circle cut out of the acrylic with a laser cutter. Cuts very well, and fast.
have you thought of using cylindrical tubes of acrylic and then cutting out a circle for the light? that way you would avoid having joins.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, using tubes was my first thought... but it turns out that large diam. acrylic tubes are incredibly expensive. Also, I'm not sure how I would cut those tubes cleanly so that the ends are presentable. If I laser cut a flat sheet and then heat and bend it into a box I've got clean edges and I can avoid doing any ugly joins.
ReplyDeleteanother idea is using an acrylic castin resin and some type of mold. This way any form can be achieved.
ReplyDeleteI have seen some interesting resing jewelery, where they have embedded a strip of patterned fabric or paper inside the resin. Could this be used with the craft paper where it is incorporated into the resin casing?
This is an interesting resin lamp:

Thanks for the comment. Ya know, I've done some cast acrylic, and it's interesting but it's a gnarly process. Very time consuming and difficult. So I think I'm going to shy away from that!
