Here's a new lamp idea that I'm calling the Chaotic Akiri
Ingredients: one lamp socket set, leftover from the discontinued curly lamp; approx. 4 feet of recycled kraft packing paper.
I think some order needs to be applied to the chaos for it to become a 'product'.

ReplyDeletehmm, I was thinking a more clean modern form for the lamp, but the chicken is food for though, so to speak :)
ReplyDeleteOooooh, i love this ! ! !
ReplyDeleteHow do you keep the paper from catching fire?
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could stuff the whole thing in a clear plastic sphere like a big egg/bubble sort of shape? That would make also make it easier to dust.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I would use a CFL bulb which emits very little heat. And I was thinking the same thing about the clear plastic. However I had a plastic cube in mind because its regularity would contrast more with the paper.
ReplyDeleteYeah, then it could double as a little table, like a nightstand or something!
ReplyDeleteBut maybe also try a bubble shape? i mean, does it *have* to contrast with the paper? Or maybe it would be cool to have something so techy yet organicly-shaped? Maybe the smooth clear plastic surface would be contrastive enough?
no it doesn't have to contrast, but I think it will be more compelling if it does. think of the original akiri lamps by noguchi: they are natural and imperfect but very controlled at the same time. also a square shape is easy and cheap to make, whereas an organic bubble is very difficult to make...
ReplyDeleteDifficult to make could be a plus, if you could figure it out ... would make it harder for people to copy. :)
